Since these holiday decorative lights will be installed during inclement weather, SPT-2 Christmas light wire can be chosen as it has slightly thicker insulation than commercial grade SPT-1.

These power cords have male end plugs only. Since the low-current LED bulbs are installed in this project, install a female plug on the end of one of the wires so that it can run 200 feet continuously. 18 AWG wire rated at 10 amps has a maximum transmission distance of 250 feet. Using a single extension cord with a splitter, run a single rope or 100 feet from the top of the tree with the end of the rope at the top, then insert the rope into the extension cord about 1/3 of the way up the tree and the remaining 200 feet of lights. This easy-to-install T-configuration is what we generally recommend for all power cords with a single male plug.

The lights are often plugged in and tested during installation, so any problems can be caught along the way, rather than becoming accidental when a "switch was flipped".

If you prefer the look of incandescent or more traditional light bulbs, perhaps painted vintage-style bulbs, they could just as easily be used in the style of wire used for this project.
